That and if they completely remade Mario 64 similar to Crash and Spyro it makes the other two games look older and not show an accurate evolution of the series so they'd have to remake them too. But, if you wanted to you can just as easily not save your progress while you play or delete your file if you die. If you are talking about permadeath I think that is a rather silly feature to put in a Mario game.

All you need to do is set Project64 to run under Windows 7 emulation. I can only assume that Project64 doesn't play nice with some video cards.
